Palm Sunday is always a thought provoking reminder of the last week of Jesus’ early life before He was mocked, ridiculed, beaten beyond recognition, tortured, humiliated and ultimately gave His life in our place at Calvary. Pastor Ron posed the question, as if to Jesus Himself, “Why did you go to Jerusalem?”
Throughout his message as he outlined the events, dialogue and last minute object lessons Jesus taught his disciples, the question was repeatedly asked, “Why did Jesus go to Jerusalem?” By now, the congregation was totally engaged and our imagination ushered us into that place where we connected spiritually and emotionally. We envisioned Jesus making His entrance into Jerusalem on the donkey, which fulfilled Zechariah’s prophecy (Zech. 9:9) and imagined hearing the crowd shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of Lord! The King of Israel!” (John 12:12-14). Although they were shouting— saying the right words, “Hosanna” which means, “Save us”, they didn’t perceive the truth about His Person, Purpose, or Plan. They were expecting a temporal deliverance from a political system, but His people had missed an opportunity of a lifetime—receiving and knowing their Messiah—King of the Jews (John 19:19).
Even today, many are looking for help in all the wrong places, for all the wrong reasons, and from all wrong people. Consequently, they are missing out on knowing the Truth. This is the season, when all the right words are spoken, and some people do all the right things such as attend a church worship service. Yet, they don’t perceive or understand who Jesus is because they have no relationship with Him. Neither do they understand why He went to Jerusalem or the Plan for the salvation of all men by accepting and receiving Him as Savior and submitting to His Lordship.
I pray, let this week be more than just another superficial ritualistic religious observation of casual recognition with temporary reverence, but that we cry out in sincerity and faith, “O save us!” (“Hosanna!”).
I pray that this week people would realize and acknowledge the Truth, and believe the answer to the question, “Why did Jesus go to Jerusalem.” The answer is a very simple one…He went to Jerusalem JUST FOR YOU…JUST FOR ME…AND FOR ALL who will believe that He is the Son of God, Savior of the world, the Passover Lamb once and for all;; that takes aways the sins of the world; that He died in our place; that on the third day He resurrected Himself, and ascended to the Father, and NOW is seated at the right hand of the Father’s Throne in heaven interceding for us that we can live a life overflowing, rich and satisfying both now and forevermore. (Ref. John 10:10, Romans 4:25; 8:38).
Happy Holy Week! Happy Resurrection Day April 24, 2011!!!!
